Sunday Sounds: Garden State

Garden State SoundtrackEvery so often, there’s a movie soundtrack that is originally intended to boost, echo or play along with the theme of a movie, but winds up defining a moment in time, a movement or even a generation.

Garden State’s soundtrack was one of those defining moments, where indie music formally devoured the alternative label for good.  It introduced the world to The Shins, and with the inclusion of Nick Drake and Simon & Garfunkel, linked the influences to their modern day counterparts.  This music map is what differentiates Garden State from other similar soundtracks, not limiting itself to the few years surrounding the movie’s release, but reaching back to show how (and where) somebody like Thievery Corporation found their inspiration.

A short list of other examples of era-defining soundtracks are ‘The Graduate,’ ‘The Big Chill,’ ‘Trainspotting,’ and ‘The Breakfast Club.’  All of them solid portraits of life at a specific moment in time.

This Sunday, find the defining soundtrack for your favorite era, or better yet, create your own definition.
