Don’t be put off by the terrifying four-eyed saber-toothed…tiger? Maybe? The three gentlemen of Savoy kindly dropped a golden nugget of electro on the world, priming them for what looks to be another big year of touring behind their giant laser set-up.
Clocking in at just under an hour, Savoy takes the listener through the seedy underbelly of electronic music, with marching bass, grinding, intertwined synth lines spending most of it’s time in electro-house, but they also manage to work in a little dub, a little trap and even hip-hop into the mix. If I was only allowed a single word to describe the sound on Self Predator, that word would be swarthy. Swarthy in a good way, the kind of swarthy that will keep you coming back for more.
If you’re an older head looking for something new, but you’re not quite sure where to start, I find an easy comparison to Crystal Method and Orbital throughout the fourteen songs. Highlights include their amazing collab with Bright Lights on “So Bad,” the dark funk of “Bizzy” (this needs a Bassnectar remix), and the somewhat forebodingly titled, very spy soundtrack sounding “Prey for New York.”
